PTA Board Nominations
Spring Valley Family:
You should be receiving information in your child’s communication folder about our upcoming PTA Executive Board Elections. All four positions on the Executive Board will become vacant at the end of this school year. Therefore, an entirely new PTA Board will need to be nominated and elected at the final PTA General Body meeting on May 17th. Positions that will be available are:
- President
- Vice President
- Treasurer
- Secretary
Mrs. Parker and Mrs. Bass are leading the nomination committee. If you are interested in being nominated for one of these roles please contact them.
The following Committee Chair positions will also be available:
- Communications Chair
- Special Events Chair
- Fundraising Chair
We look forward to inducting a new Board into office this month. I hope to see many of your names on the ballot.

Parents: Theme baskets will be on display this week from 10am – 1pm. You are welcome to stop by the school and preview the many wonderful theme baskets, estimation jars and items available for the silent auction.

The Great Human Race
Run, Walk or Volunteer to raise money for our school!
When does this fabulous event take place?
- Saturday, March 26, 2011 (Rain or shine)
- Registration begins: 7:00am
- Run starts: 8:30am
- Walk starts: Immediately following runners
Where does this fabulous event take place?
- Durham Bulls Athletic Park
- 309 Blackwell St - Downtown Durham
- Run/Walk course: newly renovated Downtown Durham Streetscape
Who benefits?
Funds will be raised to benefit Spring Valley’s equipment inventory. The run and walk is open to all (students and parents).
Why does the Volunteer Center put this event on?
The Great Human Race is a proven fundraiser that has been successful in the Triangle area for fifteen years and continues to grow. The mission of the Volunteer Center of Durham is to connect people with meaningful opportunities to serve. There are so many wonderful organizations in Greater Durham and we want to make sure they continue to thrive!

The easiest fund raiser – Jump Rope for Heart
Spring Valley Elementary is participating in a very special community service program to raise funds for the American Heart Association. The great thing about this fundraiser is the way with which you ask for donations. Two simple steps
- create a website
- send emails to all your friends.
That’s it!!
Run on over to www.americanheart.org/jump and create an account for your son or daughter. Walk through the wizard and in a few minutes you’ll have your very own webpage like this one. If you have webcam, you can easily create a video for your personal page.
It’s a fun and EASY way to get involved!

Create your own puzzle
Teachers are always looking for ways to improve children’s spelling capabilities. Word Search puzzles are a great way to accomplish this. Recently, my son’s teacher assigned us the task of creating a word search puzzle using a free online website. It took all of 5 minutes to add the spelling words and print. Very easy to use.
